On Saturday 16th January, 8 Cubs from 2nd Ifield and 1st Southgate along with 4 leaders attended the West Sussex Launch Event at Out of Bounds to celebrate 100 years of Cubs. During the action packed morning, they took part in numerous high rope activities including the Lightening Crack, Skyscraper, Speed Climbing, Checkerplate, Leap of Faith and Vertical Drop Slides. After an action packed morning, they settled down to eat lunch before singing happy birthday to Cubs around a Cubs100 cake.
7 explorers and 3 leaders attended Gilwell Wintercamp Friday 8th January to 10th January in all it’s mud and glory. Along with several thousand others! At Wintercamp 2016 they were able to try a huge number of activities including miniature tank driving, a giant swing, shooting, archery, crafts, quad bikes, go karts, laser tag and a disco, camp fire and cinema. Some photos of these activities are included below. There were many other activities too. The day and night programme kept them totally entertained.
The annual Crawley District Wappenshaw was held today with over 25 local shooters taking part in 6 yrd pistol, rifle, biathlon and archery. Congratulations to 4 Explorers from Drake Explorer Unit who came 4th in the Operation Triangle Night Hike on Saturday 21st / Sunday 22nd November. Operation Triangle is a night exercise for teams of 4 Explorer Scouts. The exercise involves hiking approximately 18 miles across country (longer if they get lost!). Teams will walk along the course as directed, reporting at the various incident and checkpoints designed to test teamwork, scouting skills and navigation.
A total of 61 Beaver Scouts and Cub Scouts gathered at St Andrew’s Church on Friday to receive their certificates in recognition of achieving the Chief Scout’s Bronze and Silver Awards. On Remembrance Sunday, Scouts through the town join acts of remembrance. Some groups joined the ceremony in the town centre, whilst others went to their local churches to show their respects to those who have fallen for our peace. 6th Crawley Scout Group joined the congregation at St Alban’s Church in Gossops Green where they joined in placing poppies on a cross, before prayers were offered in thanksgiving for the lives lost in wars and the two minutes silence.
40 members from Crawley District including Scouts, Explorers, Network, Scout Active Support, Leaders and Shooting Instructors have recently returned from the National Scout Shooting Competition at Bisley (16th Oct to 18th Oct). This year there were over 800 Scouts partaking in the competition. An impressive number of trophies and medals were won between the Crawley District competitors as listed below. Congratulations to all of those who won awards and keep up the hard work training for future years as we have come a long way in the last few years!
