The late Spring bank holiday weekend saw the start of the annual 1st Crawley expedition to Eryri (Snowdonia).
This year we stayed in new lodgings near Llanberis, right in the heart of the National Park.
After a long journey on Saturday, the fun began on Sunday with a day of gorge scrambling.
Decked out in wet suits, helmets and buoyancy aids, we headed up over rocks and waterfalls, slid down natural slides and jumped into deep pools. We even had the ‘pleasure’ of climbing through a feature called the “Elephants Behind”!
With a very early morning start, Monday was mountain day. A short drive to Ogwen, then off to climb the Glyders. Heading up between Tryfan and Bristly Ridge, the sun was bright but a brisk breeze kept the temperature pleasant.
Once on to Glyder Fach we headed for the Cantilever Stone for an investiture of one of our Scouts – congratulations Emma, I’m sure that’s a moment you will never forget!
Before the broken summit of Glyder Fawr, there was the some formidable scrambling over Castell Y Gwynt (Castle of the Winds). Finally our decent down Glyder Fawr’s Western scree slopes took up to a well earned extended break at the small lake, Llyn y Cwn.
But we weren’t finished yet! Our final descent took us down through the daunting Devil’s Kitchen before finally hitting level ground.
All in all, a fantastic few days with equally remarkable weather. Thanks to all who helped make it happen. I’m sure there will be many young people eagerly awaiting next years’ instalment.
