District Youshape Event 2018

On Sunday 15th April, Crawley District Scouts Youth Commissioners ran the first District Youshape event at Stanford Scout Campsite. Over the course of the day, we had just under 50 participants from across Cubs, Scouts and Explorers. It was a shame about the weather but everyone had fun regardless!

During the day, the participants got to try a number of activities including Archery, Rifle Shooting, Backwoods Cooking, Fire Lighting, Team Games and a Youth Forum.

The purpose of the Youth Forum is to encourage and help the youth members put forward their ideas and shape their scouting experience in a fun, engaging and dynamic environment. Young people working in partnership with adults in Scouting, has always been something we have been proud of. Youth Shaped Scouting not only improves the way we Scout, but also the enjoyment of the young people involved. Learning to speak up, be heard and work towards improving something you are passionate about is an incredible learning experience for the youngest Beaver right the way through to our eldest Network member.

Some of the suggestions put forward by the participants include:

  • Swimming
  • Laser Quest
  • Film Nights
  • Tree Climbing
  • Pillow Fights
  • Ice Skating
  • Gardening
  • Cooking
  • Den Building
  • Crystal Maze
  • Roller Disco
  • Scouts Got Talent
  • Tea Party

The District Youth Commissioners will be working with the District Team and Section Leaders over the next year to help try and put some of these ideas into practise!

At the end of the session, everyone received the YouShape badge and Wristband for taking part which can be worn on your uniform until the end of 2018.

Many thanks to all the support we had over the day from the archery team, shooting team, wider district team (who helped with admin on the day and ran our firelighting and backwoods cooking), Crawley Scout Network (who camped over the night before to make sure the site was ready for the event in the morning and our DC (who kept all of the participants fed and watered and the instructors fuelled with Tea / Coffee!).

Some photos of the event are available below. We will be adding more over the coming week so keeps your eyes peeled!
