Last weekend 4 Scouts from 5th Crawley walked from Box Hill to Caterham . They endured two contrasting days with bright warm weather on Saturday to 80mph winds with relentless heavy rain on the Sunday along the North Downs Way.
Over the two days Corey, Alex, Luke and Catherine visited 3 Victorian forts at Box Hill, Reigate and Caterham which were constructed to protect London in the 1890s to thwart a potential threat from France.
The highlight on Saturday evening at the campsite was the Cowboy Casserole, otherwise it was a scary night with the wind howling through the trees at the campsite just off the North Downs Way near Reigate.
During January and February the Scouts undertook extra training locally and on the South Downs to prepare for the weekend, improving their navigation skills, route planning, fitness and menu planning. This work helped them to overcome the weather, difficult terrain and a sprained ankle. Their navigation and time keeping on Sunday was faultless, arriving at the finish point on time although a little damp and weary but in good spirits.
To finish their Expedition Award Corey, Alex, Luke and Catherine will be sharing their experience and their purpose in the next couple of weeks.
